Menton, The City of Lemon
"The Lemon of Menton has obtained recognition for its specificity and excellence through a protected geographical index...
From cooking ingredient to luxury product, this fruit has enabled the city to develop in a grandiose way until it has become the center of economic activity and the Principality's leading port!
The Lemon Festival® in Menton attracts more than 200,000 visitors each year. The next one will be from February 17 to March 3, 2024."
"A city rich in its past and looking to the future, Menton does not fail in its artistic vocation. Its architectural and botanical heritage, of considerable and preserved interest, which combines elements of the Gallo-Roman heritage with the Renaissance influence or Mediterranean, earned it the award of the "City of Art and History" label in 1991. Visit the Jean Cocteau Museum and the Bastion, located on the Menton seafront. Each year, a renewed exhibition of the collections of the museum makes it possible to reflect on the plural genius of Jean Cocteau."
“ On one side, the orange trees, the exotic flower beds and the fountains of the Jardins Biovès. On the other, the 3.2 km of the Baia del Sole and a breathtaking sea view. The Casino Barrière Menton enjoys a privileged location. Palm trees, arches and Art Deco architecture with Moorish accents characterize this magnificent establishment built in 1934. The Casino Barriera Menton is a space of 900 m2 entirely dedicated to gaming with Electronic Slot Machines, Wheels and Black-Jack, Black-Jack Tables, English Roulette and Ultimate Hold'em Poker. A gala hall for dinner shows, theme evenings, concerts, one-man shows or private receptions. ”
… but also of the Baroque heritage …
“ Impossible to come to Menton without visiting the historic center or the old town. From the border with Italy to Capo Martino, the eye is drawn to the colorful facades. You walk through the maze of alleys between shadow and light, warmth and freshness. It dates back in history from the Middle Ages to the Baroque. Once past the majestic ramps that go up to the Basilica of San Michele, take a break in the cemetery! Enjoy the spectacle of this baroque decor! The view of Les Sablettes beach and the old port alone is worth the climb. From there, continuing by narrow stairs, you reach the cemetery of the Old Castle which dominates the site and offers a panoramic view of the whole bay.”
… and again, the city of wonderful beaches …
“ Opposite the casino, to the west of the old village, several beaches follow one another along the Promenade du Soleil. Borrigo beach is made up of pebbles and offers a beautiful width and seduces with its easy access. Casino de Menton beach, made up of large pebbles, has an access ramp for people with reduced mobility. Menton Market Beach is wide and comfortable with smaller pebbles. Fossan Beach is non-smoking. It is located near the Jean Cocteau museum. Les Sablettes certainly the most beautiful of the beaches of Menton, as it offers a beautiful view of the mountains of the Southern Alps and the colorful houses. Rondelli beach has nothing to envy to its sister in terms of panorama: the view of the old town is breathtaking.”
… without forgetting its Mediterranean flavors …
“Each town on the Riviera has its own local speciality: the dishes of Nice are not the same as those of Roquebrune, which are not the same as those of Menton. In Menton, restaurants and pastries stand out thanks to the lemon, the city's emblem!
For a gift or just to taste, here are the top 5 gastronomic specialties of Menton: Lemon oil to wake up the kitchen; Herbin jams, an artisanal production; Barbajuan; The socca; The pichade; The little sweeter: Menton fougasse.”
It's a Dream
BOAT HOTEL
With its brightly colored houses overlooking the sea, Menton is a real postcard landscape. The promenade along the seafront offers a beautiful view of the old town and its basilica, which can be seen from the various points of interest in the city.
As for the beaches , you are spoiled for choice! Towards the Promenade du Soleil, from the Casino de Menton to the Vieux Port, there are several pebble (or gravel) beaches. Entirely public, they are supervised during the summer season. For children, it will be better to go to the sandy beach of Les Sablettes. The beach of Rondelli (next to the port of Garavan) is also very pleasant, small and with a magnificent view of the old town.
But Menton is not just the sea! The beautiful gardens are worth the detour (plan a day to visit them), as is the Jean-Cocteau museum or the old town. Many events throughout the year in the cultural, musical, sporting, nautical or simply family fields, such as the Lemon Festival , in February.
